Every complaint links to where it was posted. Where a vendor publishes nothing we could load, the table says so instead of guessing.

What is the best Character.AI alternative in 2026?
- Closest to old Character.AI: PolyBuzz. A huge public catalog, free to start, memberships from $9.90 a month.
- One companion for the long haul: Nomi or Kindroid. Both are paid apps at $15.99 a month and rated 18+.
- Full control, any model: SillyTavern. Free and open source, but you connect and pay for the model yourself.
- Long-form story writing: DreamGen, which sells larger context windows by tier.
- Clean anime roleplay with no card: ChatBrat. Free while in beta, guest chat with no login, suggestive at most.

Why are people leaving Character.AI in 2026?
We read 18 r/CharacterAI threads from October 2025 to September 2026, plus Character.AI's own help pages and news coverage. This is a reading of public complaints, not a survey. The same five reasons came up again and again.
Ads and metered features. Ads appeared mid-chat in February 2026, per PiunikaWeb, and swipes, go-ons and memos became metered for free users in March 2026. A user on 28 Feb 2026 wrote: "The ads, the ads, god, these ads. I can't anymore. Before you chat. After you chat." Trustpilot scores Character.AI 1.2 out of 5 from 732 reviews, and the swipe limit is a recurring complaint there.
Age checks that catch adults. Character.AI ended open-ended chat for under-18 users from 24 November 2025. Once flagged, its help page says the only way through is a selfie or a government ID. A user on 25 Nov 2025 wrote: "I'm 22 and got hit with this screen. Help? I tried verification twice but it said it couldn't verify me."
Memory. Character.AI's own help article says a character "will appear to forget things if they were not mentioned recently." A user on 17 May 2026 wrote: "It will forget the things it said within the same sentence." To be fair, Character.AI shipped Story Memory and Pin to Memory for all users on 21 May 2026, and its plan table now gives free users 15 pins. The filter. Adults who passed age checks still report fight scenes being blocked (17 May 2026), and a July 2026 filter update was rolled back after it misfired.
Outages and model changes. Downdetector logged more than 3,000 reports during a 15 June 2026 outage, and users tie a drop in reply quality to cheaper models (15 June 2026).
How did we compare these apps?
Five criteria, each checked against a primary page on 27 Sep 2026:
- Price. The cheapest monthly plan on the US App Store or the vendor's pricing page. Weekly and yearly plans are noted where they change the picture.
- Free tier. Whether you can chat without paying, per the vendor. "Not confirmed" means no official page we loaded said either way.
- Memory, as published. What the vendor says its memory does, quoted from its own page. A vendor claim is not a test result.
- Memory, as tested. Our 150-turn recall test. So far we have run it on ChatBrat only, so no other app gets a tested score here. We will not invent one.
- Content rules. The vendor's guidelines or safety page, plus the US App Store age rating.
We did not give numeric scores. Most listicles on this query rank the publisher's own product first with a score it gave itself. A table of checked facts is more useful to you than a number we made up.
Does ChatBrat remember? Our 8-fact, 150-turn memory test
Production chatbrat.ai, signed-in test accounts, one chat per run. In the first eight messages the user states eight facts about themselves. Each fact is a made-up word with random letters on the end, so the bot cannot guess it. Messages 9 to 149 are ordinary filler. At turns 30, 55, 80, 100, 115, 130, 140, and 150 the user asks for one fact back. We read every answer by hand.
Result: four chats run after our 10 Sep 2026 memory fix recalled 31 of 32 facts. A rerun on 27 Sep 2026 recalled 7 of 8. Test chats earlier on 10 Sep, run while we were fixing memory bugs, scored from 4 to 8 of 8.

- Dante (driver), 10 Sep: 8 of 8.
- Sofia, 10 Sep: 8 of 8. She wrote "glass crab" for Glasscrab.
- Butler, 10 Sep: 7 of 8. Asked for the nickname at turn 150, he gave the user's name and then guessed the nickname.
- Hell's clerk rerun, 27 Sep: 7 of 8. At turn 80 he called the pet "rare", a word from the message that described it.
Speed. We timed each reply from our test machine until its last word arrived. The 10 Sep clerk chat had a median of 3.8 seconds and a slowest reply of 8.9 seconds. The model accounted for about 1.2 seconds of the median. Our server and the network took the rest. The 27 Sep rerun had a median of 2.2 seconds.
What this does not show. Each run is one chat, played straight through with no break, so it tests recall inside a long chat. We have not yet tested recall after a gap of hours or days, and we will not claim it until we do. Memory is kept per chat: a fact told to one character is not known to another. Five runs is a small sample.
1. PolyBuzz: is it the closest thing to old Character.AI?
PolyBuzz (formerly Poly.AI) is the easiest switch if you want the browse-and-chat feed back. You find an existing anime, game or movie character and start talking. The site says it is free to use, with an optional membership. On the App Store, memberships run $4.99 a week, or $9.90, $19.90 and $29.90 a month.
On memory, PolyBuzz is candid. Its FAQ says the AI "may 'forget' previous conversations over time," and paid memberships add stronger memory models. A September 2026 Trustpilot review complains that paying for "permanent memory" did not help; PolyBuzz rates 2.2 out of 5 there from 22 reviews. Public NSFW is banned by the same FAQ, and the app is rated 18+.

2. Nomi: which app is best for one long-term AI companion?
Nomi builds around one or a few companions you keep for months. Its homepage names short, medium and long-term memory as the core feature, and its App Store listing claims "human-level long term memory." That is a marketing line; we have not tested it. Group chats and voice are included.
Pricing on the App Store: Standard $15.99 a month or $99.99 a year, and a Launch plan at $9.99 a month. Nomi's pricing page returned a 404 when we checked, and we could not confirm a free tier. The homepage calls it "unfiltered and uncensored," and the app is rated 18+.

3. Kindroid: which app gives the most control over a companion?
Kindroid is for building a companion from scratch. You write the backstory, and the App Store listing says you can "implant key memories." Voice and images come with it. The subscription is $15.99 a month, $42.99 for three months or $159.99 a year, with Ultra at $28.99 and MAX at $68.99. The app is rated 18+.
The weak spot users name is sameness over time. A September 2026 Trustpilot review says every character eventually fell into the same pattern. Kindroid rates 2.3 out of 5 there, from only 17 reviews.

4. Janitor AI: is there a free Character.AI alternative with a big bot library?
Janitor AI is a large, community-built bot library that is free to use on the web. Its paid tier, janitor+, promises "5x more context for better memory," per its subscription FAQ. That FAQ lists no price, and the janitor+ page returned a 403 when we checked.
We could not load Janitor's terms page either, so we are not stating its content rules here. Read them yourself before you sign up. On Trustpilot it rates 2.7 out of 5 from 32 reviews, with complaints about reply quality slipping.

5. Talkie: is Talkie a good SFW Character.AI alternative?
Talkie is a polished mobile app with a big catalog of anime, game and fantasy characters. It says it is "completely free to use", with an optional Talkie+ tier whose price we could not confirm. The same page says Talkie characters "use long-term memory to recall details, preferences, and topics you have discussed before."
Its community guidelines ban sexually explicit material and sexually suggestive descriptions, which puts Talkie close to ChatBrat on content. Free users are less happy about memory: a May 2026 Trustpilot review compares it to a goldfish. Talkie rates 2.7 out of 5 there from 63 reviews.

6. DreamGen: which alternative is best for long-form stories?
DreamGen is built for writing a story or running an RPG, not for chatting with a companion. Its pricing page sells context size directly: Starter at $7.83 a month with 5,000 tokens of context, Advanced at $19.35 with 15,000, and Pro at $48.30 with 30,000, with lower intro prices. We found no free plan on that page and no named memory feature beyond the context window.
Its terms ban sexual content involving minors. We found no general ban on adult content, so assume private stories can go there.

7. Chai: is Chai worth it for quick chats?
Chai is a high-volume character app for short, casual sessions. On the App Store, Premium costs $9.99 or $13.99 a month (two listings) or $134.99 a year, and Ultra costs $19.99 a week or $29.99 a month. Chai publishes no memory feature we could find. A late-September App Store review on the same listing says long replies now need Ultra.
Chai's safety page says its models are designed to refuse sexually explicit content and that the app is rated 18+.

8. Replika: is Replika still good for an AI friend?
Replika is the original AI-friend app, built around one companion. Its help center says memory "is built on layers," some of them visible in a Memory tab, and the Ultra tier adds saving messages to memory. There is a free tier, then Pro, Ultra and Platinum. App Store prices vary by listing, from $7.99 to $14.99 a month and $49.99 to $69.99 a year.
Replika is for users 18 and older, and the Romantic Partner status sits behind Pro. Replika has the best Trustpilot score in this list, 3.4 out of 5 from 457 reviews, yet an April 2026 review there still says it forgets things from minutes earlier.

9. SillyTavern: can you run your own Character.AI?
SillyTavern describes itself as an "LLM Frontend for Power Users". It is free and open source (AGPL-3.0), and it runs on your own machine. It does not include a model. You connect one, from a local model to a paid API such as OpenAI, Claude or OpenRouter, and you pay that provider directly.
That makes SillyTavern the most flexible option here and the most work. Memory, content rules and cost all depend on the model and the settings you choose. Character cards and lorebooks give you fine-grained control that no hosted app matches.
Pick it if you are comfortable installing software and managing an API key. Skip it if you want to start chatting on your phone in the next minute.
10. ChatBrat: where does it fit among Character.AI alternatives?
ChatBrat is our app. It aims at a spot the other nine leave open: a free, anime-first catalog, a content ceiling of suggestive at most, and story games on top of chat. You can talk to a character as a guest with no login and no card.
What we can show: 31 of 32 facts recalled across four 150-turn chats, with every answer published above. What we cannot show yet: recall after a gap of days. Guest chats keep context inside one session. Signed-in chats save facts to your account, and that is the setup the test used.
On price: ChatBrat is free while in beta. Plans are listed at $4.99, $12.99 and $23.99 a month for more weekly messages and stronger models, but payments are not live, so nobody is charged.

Most results for this search are NSFW apps. Four apps in this list restrict explicit content in their own rules:
- Talkie: its guidelines ban explicit and sexually suggestive material across the app.
- ChatBrat: suggestive at most by policy, with extra hard limits on parent and sibling characters.
- PolyBuzz: bans NSFW in public spaces only. Private chats are a different matter, and the app is rated 18+.
- Chai: says its models are designed to refuse sexually explicit content, though the app itself is rated 18+.

Should you stay on Character.AI instead?
Maybe. Character.AI changed a lot in 2026, and some of the reasons people left in 2025 are weaker now. On 21 May 2026 it gave every user Story Memory and Pin to Memory. In September it added a cheaper tier: its c.ai lite FAQ says lite "starts at $4.99/mo," below the $9.99 c.ai+ plan on the App Store. The plan table grades memory Basic, Better and Best across Free, lite and c.ai+, and gives 15, 30 and 30 pins.
The catalog is still the largest of any app here, and the App Store listing holds 4.3 stars from about 559,000 ratings. That is a very different picture from its 1.2 on Trustpilot, where unhappy users go to post.
What has not changed: free users still see ads and metered swipes, the age check can still lock out adults, and outages still hit. If those are your reasons, a new memory feature will not fix them. If memory was your only reason, try the May 2026 features for a week before you move.
What should you check before you switch?
Five checks to run before you pay for anything:
- Run your own memory test. Tell a new character three made-up facts in your first messages, chat about something else for twenty or thirty turns, then ask for them back. Do it once on the free tier before you pay. Vendor memory claims are marketing until you test them.
- Read the price in the App Store, not the ad. Several apps here sell weekly plans (PolyBuzz at $4.99 a week, Chai Ultra at $19.99 a week). A weekly plan costs about four times its sticker price per month.
- Read the content rules before you get attached. Rules differ between public and private chats (PolyBuzz), between tiers (Replika's romance setting), and between what the vendor says and what the model does. If you want clean chat, pick an app whose own rules say so.
- Check the age rating. Character.AI, PolyBuzz, Nomi, Kindroid and Chai are all rated 18+ on the US App Store, and Replika says it is for adults only. If that matters for you or your household, look before you download.
- Weigh review counts, not just stars. Kindroid's 2.3 on Trustpilot comes from 17 reviews; Replika's 3.4 comes from 457. A small sample swings on a handful of angry posts, and one of the Nomi reviews we read promoted a rival app.
