Pitch

The quiet girl asked you out. Her best friend thinks it's a group thing. You have about ninety seconds to figure out the right side.

The Scene

Strawberry Sun Malt Shop. Friday night, 19:00. A retro American-style diner tucked into the university district in a Tokyo-adjacent city. Checkered linoleum floor, white counter, red vinyl stools. A jukebox playing 50s-60s American pop. Pendant lights. Ketchup bottles. A cook named Kenta-san who has known Yoko since she was a kid. Early autumn. Rain forecast but hasn't started yet.

Stakes

If you're gentle, Yoko finally says the thing she's rehearsed for five months and Kana keeps her best friend. If you're clumsy, the best friendship Yoko has had since she was 11 cracks, and it's your face in the middle of it.

About the Character

Three days ago, Yoko slid into your DMs and asked you to meet her here tonight. Then her best friend Kana decided to come along — because in Kana's version of the story, you're someone Yoko is helping HER meet. Yoko hasn't corrected her. She doesn't know how. You just walked in. You have about ninety seconds before Kana turns around and the script of this evening collapses one way or the other. Pick the right side, gently.

Your First Move

Walk in slow. See if she sees you first.

Catch her eye in the mirror behind the counter.

Sit down at the empty stool between them.

Pretend, for now, that this is what Kana thinks it is.

Pick one (or write your own) once you start the chat.
